Suffolk County faces a pressing water quality crisis due to outdated septic systems that leach nitrogen into groundwater, polluting our bays, rivers, and drinking water. With over 360,000 homes relying on cesspools, the need for innovative and alternative wastewater treatment solutions has never been more urgent. Excess nitrogen fuels harmful algal blooms, depletes oxygen in waterways, and threatens marine life, local fisheries, and coastal resilience.

Turning the Tide

With the passage of Prop 2 in November that provided funding, Suffolk County is poised to take great strides in addressing this challenge by advancing its sewering strategy and exploring cutting-edge wastewater treatment technologies that reduce nitrogen pollution. These solutions, including advanced septic systems and expanded sewer infrastructure, are crucial for protecting public health, supporting economic growth, and preserving our environment.
