The 96-unit affordable housing Alegria South apartment complex is expected to open in 2028 after the Brookhaven Town Board approved the project’s design plans and awarded special permits earlier this month with a unanimous vote.
“This is the continuation of the promise that then-supervisor Ed Romaine and I made to the community 10 years ago, that we would help revitalize the entire area by bringing in much-needed services, housing and jobs to the folks there,” said councilman Michael Loguercio.
The North Bellport development, to be located at the intersection of Montauk Highway and Atlantic Avenue, is estimated to cost $55 million and is anticipated to help address Long Island’s housing shortage while providing affordable and workforce housing options for families, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
The developer, Peter Florey of D&F Development, is also responsible for the construction the $30 million, 70-unit Gleneagle Green affordable housing project on Atlantic Avenue in North Bellport, which opened back 2021.
Back in March, the Long Island Advance reported the project was awarded a $4.5 million grant from the state’s Long Island Investment Fund and a $13.2 tax break after Gov. Kathy Hochul awarded $26 million through the Long Island Investment Fund (LIIF) to further the state’s efforts to increase the housing supply.
“The housing crisis won’t solve itself,” Hochul said in a statement. “If we want New York to remain a place people can afford to call home, we have to act with urgency… expanding affordable homes for people of all ages.”
More information about the development to come next week.
