Legendary soccer superstar Pelé popularized the phrase “The Beautiful Game” to describe soccer for its artistry and aesthetic appeal. Last week, the Bellport girls varsity soccer squad—led by second-year coach Jennifer Gibbons—lived up to that vision with a week of inspired and passionate play on the pitch.
The team honored its 13 graduating seniors in an emotional pregame ceremony on Thursday, then went on to shut out Half Hollow Hills East with a commanding 5-0 victory. On Saturday, the Clippers faced off against division powerhouse East Islip—who entered the match leading the division with 29 goals scored—and held them scoreless through regular play and through two thrilling periods of extra time, earning a hard-fought draw.
In Thursday’s match against Half Hollow Hills East, the Clippers were anchored by aggressive goalkeeping from Juliana Caffrey and a fierce, disciplined defensive line. Their coordinated offensive attack broke through repeatedly, resulting in a decisive win.
Saturday’s showdown against East Islip showcased Bellport’s resilience and tactical discipline. The Clippers’ smothering defense limited one of the county’s most dangerous offenses to just a handful of shots on net and no goals—a remarkable feat that demonstrated the team’s growth, determination and toughness.
With the week’s results, the team improved to 4-5-1 and remained in the playoff hunt with four regular-season matches remaining.
Senior Day was a celebration of more than just a season—it was a recognition of lifelong dedication. Most of the 13 seniors began playing soccer at age 4 or 5. For many, this season marks an emotional farewell to formal competitive play. Each senior was honored with flowers and escorted to midfield by family members and loved ones who have supported them throughout their soccer journey.
Several players will continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level:
Jesslene Garcia, a dynamic attacking forward/midfielder and one of Newsday’s Top 100 Players on Long Island, will play Division II soccer at Mercy University.
Madelyn Schmidt, a tenacious back winger, is set to join Southern Connecticut State University at the Division II level.
Lea Velazquez, a speedy and skilled forward, will play Division III soccer at Bridgewater State University.
The final home match of the season is this Saturday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. at Bellport High School, when the Clippers take on Smithtown West. It’s the last chance to see this determined group in action on their home pitch. Come support the players who have dedicated countless hours over the past decade to perfecting the skills required to play “The Beautiful Game.”
